These pictures were taken by Graeme Ellis (DFO) from the Biological Station, Nanaimo ; these whales were in our Harbour Friday December 14, 2007!! Others have viewed them throughout the week from their own boats and the Gabriola Island ferry. The photos with the homes in the background are near Gallows Point, Protection Island. The other photo with the larger buildings in the background is Downtown Nanaimo (Pacifica Condos under construction). The researcher caught up with them and followed them for the day in order to document who they were and where they were from. Friday was a gorgeous calm sunny day - just perfect. This particular pod of 13 is “transient”, usually seen up in Alaska and not near Nanaimo or Gabriola Island. From here the pod went down as far as Dodd Narrows and into the Nanaimo Harbour then headed north again up past the Winchelsea Islands.
